Frequently Asked Questions
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that aims to lighten the colour of the teeth, removing stains and discolouration to achieve a brighter and more radiant smile. Over time, various factors such as ageing, consumption of certain foods and beverages (like coffee, tea, and red wine), tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, and certain medications can cause the teeth to become stained or discoloured.
Teeth whitening treatments work by using bleaching agents, typically containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, to break down the stains on the tooth surface. These agents penetrate the enamel and oxidise the molecules that cause discolouration, effectively lightening the shade of the teeth.
Yes it is safe and meets the Australian Dental board standard's that's one of the most important requirements. Kim has over 17 years of dental experience and also has the qualifications to carry out this procedure. Our teeth whitening gels are extremely gentle and are performed using a hygienic non touch procedure. Everything that is used at White Smiles Geelong is dental approved and the highest quality.
A gel is used to protect the gums and a solution containing hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth. The teeth are then exposed to a special LED light that causes oxygen to be released. Stains are lifted off the surface of the teeth and the dentin is whitened. As the stains are lifted, your teeth will be restored to their natural colour.
The treatment can take anywhere between 90 minutes for one individual to 2 hours for group bookings. Our Triple Treatment consists of 3 x 20 minute sessions, a total of 60 minutes under the LED light. However, initial consult and aftercare discussion will take approximately 30 minutes extra. The same time frame occurs for 'Top up' treatments.
No you don't. However, if you have not been to the dentist in the last 6-12 months for a health check and clean, it is recommended you do so prior to your appointment to achieve optimum results!
Results vary, and depend entirely on a persons physiology. Our treatment is tailored to have your teeth 5 to 14 shades lighter post treatment.
Every individual reacts differently, but you may experience minor sensitivity for up to 48 hours post treatment. If you do experience sensitivity this is temporary and we supply a desensitising and remineralising gel.
The conclusive answer is no, teeth whitening gel will NOT damage or harm your tooth enamel. Enamel is considered the hardest tissue in the human body.
Enamel consists of tiny tubules that can only be viewed under high magnification. Even though Enamel is the outermost layer of the tooth, it is the layer of tissue beneath the enamel that absorbs the majority of the stain, called dentin. In order to achieve successful whitening, the product flows through the enamel tubules and begins to lighten the underlying stained tissue.
We do NOT recommend whitening if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Teeth whitening is not suitable for everyone. We do NOT recommend whitening if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under the age of 16; parental consent is required for clients under the age of 18.
We also do not recommend whitening if you have decayed teeth, cavities, gum disease or exposed roots. If your teeth aren't in a healthy state we recommend seeing a dentist for advice first.
crown or veneers can be whitened by removing surface staining, returning them to their original shade. They cannot be whitened past the shade that they were set by the dental technician.
